DETAILS

Session 4: A Royal Garden of Different Religions: the Persian Palace Outside Jerusalem The impressive royal gardens at the Persian governor’s palace at Ramat Rahel (just outside of Jerusalem) boast diverse plants from the far corners of the Persian Empire, and likely indicate that the Persian kings saw their efforts to rule in a way that was inclusive of various religious and ethnic identities as part of their Zoroastrian religious role to help the god Ahura Mazda transform the world into a garden state. NOTE: Based on findings from the excavations at Ramat Rahel in which Dr. Lucas Schulte participated from 2008 to 2009. Key takeaway: Our efforts towards inclusion of diverse identities can have not only practical effects of building social cohesion, but also often draw upon the teachings of our own religious traditions.
